Distinguished and Famous people from Central Australia

๐ŸŒฟ Olive Pink

Olive Pink campaigned for an arid flora reserve beside the Todd River in Alice Springs and became its honorary curator when it was established in 1956. Working with gardener Johnny Jampijinpa Yannarilyi, she began developing the place now known as the Olive Pink Botanic Garden. She lived within the reserve until her death in 1975; it opened to the public a decade later. Her contribution grew from persistent advocacy and close attention to desert plants, leaving Central Australia a living collection of its distinctive flora.

๐ŸŒŸ Emily Kam Kngwarray

Emily Kam Kngwarray's art grew from her relationship with Alhalker Country in the Utopia region. A senior Anmatyerr woman, she worked in batik before making the paintings that brought her international recognition late in life. Her canvases could vary greatly in scale and appearance while remaining grounded in cultural knowledge and responsibility to Country. The National Gallery of Australia has presented major surveys of her work, bringing early textiles together with later paintings. Her story is an essential part of Central Australia's contemporary art history.
